In March, 2000 when I moved in, I signed a “Rental Agreement” of sorts, not an Official Lease Agreement that the landlord typed himself. It was “his own set of rules” that really doesn’t comply with the Florida Statues on several issues, i.e., stating that I must give 30 days notice before I move or I’ll forfeit security deposit (that’s if I moved out prior to one year of the date of that agreement) so I know that part no longer applies to me. Also, month to month only requires only 15 days prior written notice.
Having said that, here, among other things are the problems that I am currently having. (the landlord has this habit of denying responsibility for anything that needed fixing or repairing, like paint peeling from walls, screens, etc.).
On July 18th I called gas company to check a gas leak. It probably was leaking for more than a week, but it did not smell like a gas smell, and I couldn’t even trace where the foul odor was coming from. Anyway, they came immediately and check out the stove and “red tagged” the stove for a leak in the flex hose and the stove. The day before the landlord had gone out of town on a 3 week vacation!! I called him on 7/21 on his cell and told him about the stove. He said get a hot plate until he returns! so he finally came to see me on 8/10! I have been without usage of cooking/stove for over 3 weeks. That’s the first problem. Then on 7/23 I get a bill from the gas company for over 6 which the landlord is disclaiming as his responsibility!!! He said he will replace the stove with a new one (which I know he has to do) but merely took copies of my “normal bill” and the “high one” I gave him and said his wife will talk to the gas company. I BELIEVE IT IS DEFINITELY HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY IT!!!
I definitely want to move and from his history of stealing every previous tenants’ security deposits, even if and when I find a suitable place I can afford, I would not like to pay him the last month’s rent when I move.
So sorry for the lengthy question, but I need some real good advice. Also if any of you are attorneys or know the law, please advise what I can do. Thanks so much.

Hi,
Sob sob sob. Your story does not add up at all. If this guy was so bad you would have moved years ago, so don’t crap on your Landlord. Gas lines leak when they get flexed too many times and that’s why it was red tagged. How many times have you moved it in 8+ years? The Landlord was on vacation so cut him some slack. You could have called him to ask if you could buy a new stove and take it off the next months rent. I have seen your kind in the past… grow up. If you were one of my tenants I’d love to see you move. Hit the road Jack!
